melted wire on mpem, anyone know what may have caused this?

This is a mpem off of a 96 xp, The black wire with a yellow stripe and the purple wire look to have been melted, also the black compound looks to have been melted as well. I have a replacment mpem but am leary on wether to plug it in if there is a problem that is causing this to happen. Anyone have an idea why this happened. Just dont want to fry the spare mpem.

also what do the black wire with yellow stripe and purple wire go to

The Bl/Yw wire is for the DESS lanyard, and the purple branches off as the gauge and buzzer power. Between the 2... I would say you could have a short in the dash.
