I am working on a DI ski, and I needed to measure the current draw of the fuel pump to see if it is going bad, and I wanted to see if the regulator was supplying the correct current as the ski is shutting off during idle, but not at 2000 and above out of the water. The charge voltage is 12.2 VDC at any RPM with little AC voltage, so the rectifier part of the regulator should be working. My DMM only has the ability to read current to 10 amps, which is good for most applications, but I wanted to read more current.

I found this nice little box at my local Harbor Freight yesterday.

It will read 30 amps, and plugs directly into the fuse slot. No more clamp on DC Amp meter, or opening the circuit to install a amp meter in line. Pull the fuse, and measure the current.

This might stay in the boat/ski tool kit. I will need to play with this some.
