He is asking full price for a clean, no issues, ready to go ski. "Needs to sell it fast" would be $800 if compression was perfect and thats before you talk him down. If you look at it you must do a compression test and a water test or it's worth $500-$800

wow i wish the price was that low, to be honest i havent seen a 96 xp on chicago craigslist for under 1900!,,, so i will definatly work on the price, but my question is, what would i have to do to the carbs? since he has motor work done to it?

The carbs should be fine if they are clean and properly adjusted. If you see it and find aftermarket flame arresters on it then it should have larger low speed jets. It's tough to tell what he means by "milled head". You should check the compression and the squish to see what you have. It is possible that the high speed jets could be upped, you will have to do a chop test to see your spark plugs color.
Skis must be higher up there(I have heard that), if it won't start then $1200 tops. You must check compression. His "off jetting" means it's lean and lean engines loose compression.

That's a desirable model, but $1600 seems a little high without a trailer. This is the peak season and prices will be at their peak now.

Yep... I don't know.

It has known running issues, ("needs a tune up, and the jetting is off") and no trailer. Honestly... I don't know if it's worth it. I guess I would have to go see it up close.

My questions would be...

1) What oil are you burning? (needs to be full synthetic API-TC)

2) who shaved the head, and what did they do to it?

3) Who did the motor rebuild, and is there still a warranty?

3a) was it a full rebuild, or just a top-end? (if it was just a top, I don't think I would buy it since the crank will be tired)

After that... I would check the compression myself, and look for any other mods. Also, I would pop off the RAVE caps and see if they move free.

Now... boring an engine 0.010" over shouldn't change the jetting at all. So... ask him why he thinks the jet's need to be changed.

Also... look for the gray Tempo fuel lines. If they are still on there... that's probably why it's not running right.

its a good price for the chicago area, a bit risky but if you take the normal precautions spelled out in the post above it seems worth the risk if its for your personal use and you can absorb a hit if it turns out to be bad.

what your really doing here (if I can assume the CL poster to be stating accurate statements and not just trying to unload a problem ski) is taking a $400 gamble. If you can get it running cheap & easy then you bought it right, if it turns out to be a headache, you'll wish you had spent either 2K on a known good ski, or $1k on a ski that needed the same help.

With that said whether or not you end up 400 ahead or 400 behind, well, that's boating ! If you end up 400 ahead, well, just set it aside for future problems :)

ahhh so much to think about!, i will take all of this into consideration, going to check it out soon and gonna go through everything very particularly,

thanks for all the advice guys, it was very informational and it will defiantly help me in my decision.

Personally I wouldn't touch it, for me the stock setup has all the power I need, and anything you do performance wise will effect reliability. And also it's too much money.

The jetting issue is no big deal but a red flag goes up for me on the milled head. If the squish is wrong you just made an ash try. Though you could get a stock head and go from there. I'd have to see receipt for the mentioned work.

that i disagree with, although i'm no fan of milled heads, never really saw the need, but spec pipe, prop & nozzles, water injection, F/A's are very much worth every penny, then it starts getting silly :)

well guys, i bought it, for a grand,, and boy does it fly!... it does not even bog. and the vts work. i am in love with it

thanks for all you tips guys
