any thoughts on what to paint the hull of a ski with. Im a pretty experienced auto painter so I plan on using base / clear for the topside. I am however worried about the bottom.

Any experience on what to use ????

Dupont imron. Only if it really needs painting, have you tried to buff it out?

Im guessing that it does need it. Whomever had this ski prior to me painted the entire thing. Poorly I might add. So the bottom needs to be stripped and most likely coated with something.

I would be a little too scared about spraying imron. That is some bad stuff that I believe needs an dedicated air supply for. I think that before I would tackle spraying it I would just spray gel coat. Spraying Gel issnt so bad its the work after its dried that sucks.

Any second best to imron. I know there are some paints by interlux etc that I have heard about however I have not used them.

Any thoughts on changing the bottom color. I'm pretty scared to do that because every time it gets nicked the color under will show through. I would really like to paint it black though.

thanks

Sand back down to the original color then clean with styrene. Mix your gelcoat and use a high density roller and roll on a tack coat. Roll on another coat and let it start to set up. As it gets a good tack roll on another coat. Keep doing this until you have a nice build and then add your wax to the gelcoat for the final coat. The wax will seal the gelcoat and let it cure fully. If you don't go the wax route you will need to topcoat it with PVA to seal it. Let that sit for a day or two depending on the humidity etc. and then use a mild detergent to wash off the PVA. Should be good to go after that.

Wont that make for a really rough finish... Or are there additives which allow the gel coat to lay out better. ???

thanks

Not really. Either way you're going to have to sand and polish. You can thin it with styrene or acetone for use in a gun but then you have to worry about it setting up in the gun and clogging it up. Really your only suppose to mix as much as you can apply in about ten minutes. That's why I said just roll it on, Much easier to apply and clean up and you don't have to worry about orange peel.

Well that is a thought I never considered. Maybe I could roll the first few coats, sand, then spray while using some of that new patch aid stuff that is supposed to help Gel lay out.

maybe... who knows.

I would rather just use some sort of paint but im unsure how it would hold up.

So anyone out there used any of the interlux paints or possibly a typical base / clear. curious how something other than gel coat holds up ?

thanks
