How to reach it

I have recently purchased a 95XP.It runs well and is fast. The only problem was the idle seemed low. So,I rebuilt the carbs and changed the fuel lines thinking there might be a restriction somewhere.Believe it or not the carb was like new inside and the filters were spotless.Obviously the PO must have done the carbs recently.Problem is the idle is still a bit low and it seems impossible to reach the idle speed screw with the airbox on.Is there a trick to finding it or do I have to remove the airbox to adjust it.A pic would be greatly appreciated.

The idle speed screw is actually on the linkage on the mag. side carb., there's a square hole in the bracket where the cables attach, it's behind that hole. The best and only way to set the idle is in the water with the ski in the water. Some guys set the idle with the ski on the trailer but I have found its best to set the idle when the ski has warmed up.

I just did mine last Wed., played hookey from work. I launched the ski at the ramp, went for a short ride, came back to the ramp, and set the idle. You just have to reach under the air box find the "T" handle and adjust it. Then take it for a short ride and see where the idle is. I did this 4 or 5 times until I was satisfied, the ski is now idling between 1500 and 1550.

It's also important that you do this with the airbox in place, so you kinda have to do it blind, just reach under and find the screw with the "T" handle.

There is no "T" on the screw. It is more like a miniature beer can with a slot in it(I made note of it when I worked on the carbs).I tried to reach it through the square hole but it's hard to find blind with no hair around it.There is no problem reaching the L/S screws on both carbs(they have"T"s).Guess I'll take thing apart again, locate and go from there.Maybe I can rig something up for ease of access.

I happen to have a spare set of carbs., this is the screw I'm talking about. Is yours different?

I just went and looked at my 96GTI, it's got a 717 and you're right the idle screw is different. Actually it makes it easier, just get a short piece of 5/16" fuel line and slip it over the idle screw and through the square hole. Like this.

Looks the same to me if I remember correctly. That piece of fuel line is a great idea.I have lots left over too, since all my fuel lines were 1/4" and I have 5/8" on hand in case I needed it.Won't get to work on it until the weekend though.Ski is 200 kms.away at my trailer.

Wow! What a different machine with rave's cleaned/adjusted and idle set up to 1500rpm! Doesn't stall, rattle is gone and runs like a raped ape with rpms going up to 6900+. Thanks to everyone on this site for your help!
