How much pressure on a carbon ring

I have a 260 engine and pump in a custom boat, just had to replace the carbon ring as I am sure it was not setup correct when they installed it. How much pressure should I put on the ring with the bellows? The bellow slides on an aluminum housing so the pressure is easily adjustable to really any amount, would like an half inch work?

In most cases, you put it together seated all the way and test it. To much pressure and it will wear quickly as the water coming to it can't "drip" and cool it.

You can always make it tighter if it is more than a drip.
