Hourmeter

I have a 2004 Sea Doo Sportster I'd like to install an hourmeter in. Rather than cut a hole in the dash I probably would mount it on the shelf behind the dash where all the wires terminate. Can anyone recommend a digital or mechanical hourmeter ? Most likely I'd purchase it from Amazon as they have a wide selection to choose from. I'm told by my Sea Doo dealer that a inductive type activated by wrapping a wire around a spark plug won't work. I would need a mounting bracket also unless it is held in place by 2 sided tape. How is it wired so it only registers when the engine is running ? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the imput, think I will let the dealer do it rather than fry something. I need them to scan my computer for the current hours anyaway.
