Hole in exhaust waterbox

Bought a 2016 Spark 3 up. First time on the water it had poor buoyancy, water in hull. Drained it out and rode around while checking for water. Seems good now.

Next time on the lake, the ski ended up in the shallows and sucked dirt and rocks. I replaced the impeller and wear ring. Started up and sounded good on the trailer.

When I got the ski in the water it would not start and keep running.

Attached photos for this next part.

Current issue while on the trailer I only ran it for 5-7 seconds: sometimes it would start and run, run then die or just almost start. Then I got an idea to replace the spark plugs. While changing the plugs, I noticed a piece of metal then found more pieces. I looked for the source and noticed on the back side of the (waterbox, exhaust, muffler) was a hole. Also, found the temperature sensor loose and melted looking.

I am curious about the possible causes and recommendations to avoid this issue in the future.

Holy Canoli! The exact same thing happened to me!!! In fact I was suspicious for a second that I bought your Spark haha. The hole is in the same spot as mine too and I have the melted sensor just like yours. What was your fix besides obviously replacing the muffler?
