That's not just a fuel filter, that also acts as a fuel-water separator. Should you get water in your fuel tank, it will sit at the bottom of the plastic cup, and you should be checking and emptying that cup periodically.
I have a different opinion on filters. The stock one works great, won't come apart and separates water.
The aftermarket ones will not filter out water and when they come apart or get wet will restrict flow and plug the carb filters.
My opinion is just get s new stock filter and not worry about it for another 20 years.
