Experience with Tahoe wind conditions?

I'm shopping for a boat and would like advice from anyone experienced with Tahoe conditions, especially the wind / chop that can quickly develop. With a 15' to 18' boat is it advisable to get off the lake as quickly as possible with winds gusting 25-30mph or would the boat be able to handle the waves at a conservative cruising speed?

The only way to take care of heavy wind, is to buy a bigger boat. But regardless of the size... it's no fun being out in those conditions.
