Hello I am new to this forum and never owned a jet ski or anything else for that matter. I got this 1990 bombardier for what I thought was a good deal I don't know what the problem is but my spark plugs burn up after I turn it on and go so it fires up nice on the trailer until I get it into the water then it fires up but wont idle and the if you let go of the gas it dies and wont start again until I change the spark plugs. I bought a brand new battery as well but it dies I don't know if its the stator or if I kill it from trying to start it over and over after it dies. also I was told the compression is good also it has been over heated before. Do you think I need stronger plugs or a carb cleaning? anything would realy help me out (2 stroke 580 yellow motor with a 50:1 mix)

First thing I noticed from your post is 50:1 mix, you should be using 40:1. It sounds like you are running lean, when you say you are burning the spark plugs, are you burning the electrodes? What do the plugs look like? Post a picture if you can. Changing spark plug types is not the answer.

the spark plugs look black on the electrodes oily on the treads I am at work now so I cant post a picture. It also seems that sometimes if I move the handlebars and push the stop button a few times I can get it to fire up but that is usually in the beginning when I first try to start it then I drive it around and make sure I dont let of the gas and when I do it idle for two seconds if I'm lucky and then shuts down

I would guess that your model had an oil injection system. Was that disabled and that is why you are mixing your gas? If if has an injection system you would be running rich and the plugs would be oily.
