so i had this problem w my 96 spi randomly shuttin down after running great for 3 weekends. i was convinced it was the mpem. so i spent the money for a new one only it does NOT exist in my ski. someone had modified it to work without the mpem. so my problem is that i am not gettin spark at the plugs. is there a way to test the coil? would it not be worth fixing everything back to stock? or should i just get it to fire again and get rid of it? any ideas??

96 spi???

That's a 720. Just disconnect the MPEM from the ignition, and it should spark when the engine spins.

So... since it's a very simple system... if the mag/stator unit checks with a meter... and you aren't getting a spark... then the cdi/coil unit has gone bad.
