hey guys, i have my 96 xp and i believe it is smoking a little to much out of the exhaust and burning oil a little too fast, but it doesnt seem that it affects the way it runs. the previous owner did install a valve on the oil bath line. i do not know why but just to be safe i turn the valve off when not in use... any ideas on what the issue could be? if its something quick and easy i wouldnt mind fixing it but, if not i rather just deal with it till the season is up.

thanks guys

By the oil bath line I think you are referring to the line that goes to the rotary valve, I suspect your ski has leaky crank seals. Shutting off the oil supply is a temporary solution. The other option is to replace the crank.

yes sir that would be the line. so leaky crank seals would cause it to burn to much oil even when the engine is running?

yes, to a degree it will but not TONS more,,, its more noticeable when it sits for a few days, and you get that wonderful plume of smoke that fills your garage, and makes the neighbors come over to see what the hell you set on fire :)

leaky crank seals are pretty dam common.

You will need to check the adjustment of the oil cable. It connects the oil pump to the carb so when you give it more gas it gets more oil. there is a line on the arm that turns on the oil pump ant the pump body. You will need a mirror to see it and it is just above the nut that holds the cable wheel to the pump. These two small marks should be aligned with the throttle closed and engine off. If you need to adjust it you will have to eithe loosen or tighten the cable where it connects to the rear carb.
