Thought i had this thing licked.....But it insist on being a seadont !!
1st no fuel in front carb, then afer a aftermarket rebuild it was flood central on the front carb,
went with stock diaphram and fixed the flooding....all looked pretty hopeful.....WRONG !!

Went to the lake on the 4th.....ski seemed OK at best, but it was running on both cylinders.
After 5 min or so...I hit a big wave and death !!! like someone pull the key, It wouldnd hit a lick.
Check all the fuses..all good, tow to the dock and on the trailer it went.
After a hr. or so on the trailer I put the key on hit the starter..it fired right up, so back in the water I went and it run like total crap, After fooling with it some, front carb still has issues, I just put a new needle valve kit in it, will try it out in the morning.
Carb wouldnt do the dead kill though...like I said , jumped one wave and death,i guess I will check all the grounds.
Any other Ideas ????
Im about ready to sell and start over...........

When you put the new needle and seat in... did you check the pop-off?

The shutdown after a big bump... that's either a bad lanyard post... dirty lanyard contacts... or a loose wire in the electrical box. (look for a corroded ground in the rear box)

Dont have the means to check the pop off preasure, just cranked it up and it seemed fine on the trailer.
Im pretty sure the lanyard post is all good, someone has put like 4 small ground wires on the ground side of the coil which were not very tight.....I tightened all ground wires and checked all plugs.
Im off to the boat ramp hoping for the best.

Update...........Lake trip a bust, I think Im fighting more than one problem.
I think ive go the carbs ok, but now I seeing it miss bad, wont rev just misses backfires through the exhaust.
Then...after a few minutes, erratic spark or no spark at all.
The longer it runs the worse it gets until it wont start at all, its not flooding, and its getting fuel, the carbs are spotless.
No tempo lines, great compression..what the heck am i missing
This all brings back memories of a Vmax motorcycle i have....when the computer went south the same thing happened.
I have checked all the plugs, redone grounds......the plugs and such look new.
Is it possible the computer is junk ??? ( thats what Im thinking )
Coil ????

Also, I noticed lanyard plug might have a issue.....several times i plugged it in and the display comes up as it should but as soon as i hit the starter button, display goes out and nothing, you have to pull the key and re-insert,Maybe more than once to get it to work...... Whats up with that ??
It seems to act different every time I start it.........Bipolar, I dont know.
Again....I think this ski has multiple issues, I need the skidoo gods to shine down on me.

Sounds like it could be some bad connections somewhere. It could be that the rectifier has gone bad, they're a common problem on the 951. To test if it's bad, disconnect the red wire and see if it clears up, but don't leave it like that, it won't be charging the battery.

That sounds like a grounding issue or weak battery. I have seen a ski do this and it turned out to be a combination of both.

The previous owner must have thought it had ground issues as well, he had 3 or 4 extra to the battery and another 2 to the coil.
As far as rectifier, Its had the external mod done, New battery at 100 charge, this thing has a demon in it.
What is the right way to get a proper ground ??

After thinking on this a few minutes, seems there would only be 3 or 4 really important ground points, Block being the main.
I see where the brain( harness wires ) are grounded to the block, I will remove the bolts and dremel clean ( wirebrush ) all points.
The previous owner had ground wires bolted in odd places, I stripped all that junk out.
Im starting over.............
Should i run a ground wire direct to the battery for brain and coil ?? I suppose it couldnt hurt.
I was thinking run a jumper where they are bolted to the block on the same bolt.

Thanks for the help.....I need it, I consider myself a pretty good mech. but this doo is doing me in.

From where I sit... you have a bad lanyard post, and a bad regulator.

Post: Random shut down

Regulator: Miss and back fire at RPM.

Lanyard post on order, and as far as the regulator, Ive read that if you unplug it as long as the battery is strong it should run fine.
I will check out the voltage issue,
