97 SPX sucks water into the exhaust??

Ok...seems I have another (never heard that before) challenge....:willy_nilly:

I have a 97 SPX which runs perfect when she cranks! BUT, before the day is out, she will make a sound while trying to start (sounds like a muffled back fire) and she will suck water up the exhaust....And that is it...have to tow her back to the dock.
AND then when she is on the trailer...she turn over under diress (like a potato is shoved in the tail pipe)...but when she does hit (normally LOUDLY) she will spit a gallon of water out with force uke:

We have already swapped out the exhaust with a 96 Xp...and she still does the exact same thing.

Go figure...

Could I have a bad piston...creating suction instead of compression? I cant find my dad gum compression tester...so I will go buy a new one tomorrow and check that first off...

check compression 1st, make sure fuel is not collecting in exhaust

OMG I have the same problem. I just put in a used engine after my old one blew up. This one cranks, with compression at 135/140psi. Spark is good, it's getting fuel as I can smell it on the plugs during cranking. It fires right up on the trailer, but sometimes shoots a ton of water out of the exhaust pipe during cranking. When I start it and go for a quick twitch of the throttle, it stubles and then winds up, spewing lots of blue smoke. Does this mean my crank seals are toast?

After starting up on trailer and putting in water, it acts like it wants to start, but kind of sneezes. Is that a backfire thru the carb? I know for a fact that my rotary valve is properly timed and the clearance is good (I checked both). Tried running it on ON and RES, same story. What makes these things smoke blue? What is the symptoms/effects of blown crank seals?

I thnk when you have it on trailer at home you should not turn on your hose until engine is running with the hose pinched off. And after running you should let it push all the water out, with no intake, before turning it off. So I'm not sure where your water is coming from.
I was told I have bad seal on one SPX and get smoke for a few minutes but it clears out after 3-4 minutes. Doesn't necessarily require immediate engine removal for repair.
