So im a newbie, oh well always learning! I just purchased my first pwc this week. while running it out a few issues: first thing i notice fuel gauge isnt reading at all, noticed under the storage area the plug was unplugged. (two red wires running from the fuel tank) plugged it up, no luck?.. also it consistently throttles back when hitting about 35-40 mph.(Rave valve issues?) noticed alot of blowback on the heads from them , almost like tar, that normal? all that said here's where im at.. i replaced all the tempo fuel lines, tore the carbs down, (surprisingly clean...?)pulled the raves, bellows looked good .O ring hard and very loose, reclaced oring and new gaskets, haven't put it in the water yet, anything else i've missed? oh i shot a pump of gease on the rotorary shaft, any and all help is greatly accepted and appreciated..

You're going to need to be a little more patient, most guys on this forum are at work, I just came home for lunch.

Anyway the fuel gauge is a fairly easy fix you most likely you need an new float, get the newer molded type.

I have a question, how do you know it throttles back at 35-40mph when you haven't had it in the water? The reason I as is the motor will performe entirely different when on the trailer and in the water. You really need to take it out for a ride to tell how the ski is performing.

I read your post it looks like you have everything covered except the jet pump oil.

oh sorry it's been in the water, unfrotunateky when i test drove it being new to pwc's i didnt really open it up (wot) after getting it home the next day i took it out thats when i noticed all that i posted earlier. fires right up every time and low end runs perfectly but when getting into the throttle at about 35 mph it starts the issue. sorry about the bumps... new to this particular forum others (motorcycle) seemed to be more active during these hours......thanks again

What exactly is it doing a 35mph, hesitation and bogging? What is the RPM at full throttle, I'm assuming at 35mph?

Lou

rpm's will tag about 6500-7000, but it actually just shuts off almost like a governor or such, no stuttering just like kill switch was ripped off, fires right back off and runs upto that point anyways.????

hmmmmalmost sounds like really terrible cavitation....... but just to ask ..when you are sitting in the water and you mash the throttle does it rev up real high and it seems like you are not goin anywhere in a hurry...and then starts to (grab) and go after a few sec

The more I think about it the more I thing Brock's on the right track, I believe it's cavitation and it's over revving and hitting the rev. limiter. Check the clearance between the impeller and the wear ring should be no more than .040" about the thickness of a dime.

Lou

The longer i read all the past topics i tend to believe you guys are right, i really noticed the cavitation effect when my wife got on it with me ,seem to take forever for it to pick up and launch. been reading the topics on replacing the wear ring, should be an easy fix although i've never done it, i'll give it a try and let everyone in on the results. Thanks again. btw, where would i find out the limits on the rev limiter, if that makes sense!!

your ski should shoot right up to about 7500 thats where the limiter is...i would check the clearence on the wear ring before you replce it but if it has the SPINNING YOUR WHEELS feeling then im 99.9 % sure its the wear ring causing you problems

i cant believe it ran at all, changed the wear ring out i could literally put a #2 pencil between the prop and the ring. also PO obviously never serviced it correctly, with just the basic things i've done already, Cone was only partialy full of oil too ,more water than anything, luckily no damage to the seals and bearings, replaced o rings, lubed her up and buttoned her back up....now only if it were tomorrow..lol! I bet it runs like new again, let you guys know how it turns out.....

:banghead: uuugh! just when all was going well.. well it ran like new for a couple hours, reached 64 mph +/-, quick shot out the hole, then murphy hopped on board(never shoulda slowed down for him!) It backfired and within seconds it sank, yep...sank!!! quikly dismounted and flipped it hull up, luckily help came soon thanks to the airhorn that i stashed with in reach, towed it back loaded up brought it home, utter disgust being as i just bought it three days ago. finally home and realized the backfire blew the hose off the exhaust pipe. pulled the plugs turned it over numerous times, after several rounds of pulling plugs and shots of ether she's back to life.... Now what??

You need to take it out and run it and run it hard. Was there water shooting out of the spark plug holes when you had the plugs out? WD-40 displaces water so I would unplug everthing and spray it down.

well first fix the exhaust,,but i have heard(and agree) that u need to get it on the water n run it to get all the water out of the motor,,,make sure u fog it,alot, with wd40,,u dont want to rust the brgs,,good luck,,

What's the process of foggin it as in How much? Just spray it directly into the air breather, do I do this while it's running, I turned it over several times just to blow out the water without the plugs, and after I got it running I would run it for just a few and Kill it and repeat eventually got everything below the pistons out, surely it won't hurt till in the morning will it, as far as the exhaust , that's a piss poor design IMO hose on a slick pipe w/ hose clamp , gotta be a better way...?

You probably got it, but it's important to get some fogging oil into the cylinders, spray some through the air box and take out the spark plugs and spray some into the cylinders. After that the best thing you can do is take it back to the lake and take it for a ride.

Of course you'll need to replace the exhaust hose first, actually I just did mine last week, it was paper thin. I found it at KOI, a parts supply house, it's Gates Vulco 24032, 2" ID, and I had to buy a foot, still a lot cheaper than ordering it. It was about $10.00.

It's probably not a bad idea to check the other hoses while you're at it, the other hose is just 1/2" heater hose.

I would get actual fogging oil for the internals, WD-40 doesn't have lubricating properties but it is excellent to use on the outside of the engine and for plug connections.

Well, put her back out and she ran just fine , spent about three hours on it, all was well . Thanks for all the help guys!!
