96 GTX smoking out exhaust

Hoping someone can lead me down the right track with this one. Bought this ski a few months ago from a guy that owns a shop. had an issue about a month ago that required him to replace the engine which he did for free just got it back a week ago and am working on breaking the engine in which he really didn't tell me how to do other then no tubing. so I am taking it slow on the speed for now. The problem I have noticed is that the exhaust smokes alot. I had a oil leak initially at the feed line which I have fixed. The question I have s that when I idle the ski in the water it idles around 1000rpm which if I read correctly should be around 1500. Do I need to adjust my idle speed to 1500 before I look to see if I am injecting too much oil into the system or do I have a much bigger problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With a new to you motor there will be a learning curve, smoking happens often until you know more about the mixing of oil/gas and working out the quirks of the oil injection system, once the settings are correct the smoking will still occur after a long resting period if the crank seals are laeking - this is still normal on an older model, just burn it out by running it, the extra oil is helpful to break in the new motor parts.
