My 94 gtx the other day while out on the river died i took off the seat and the mag plate fell off i put the plate on by hand and it seemed to start so i took it home. i had my son drill and tap some of the bolts because some broke off but we but on the cover and it started and idled but wouldnt take gas. then all of a sudden it wouldnt start at all and smoke came out of the carbs. it has spark and the clear fuel filter shows fuel getting to the motor the exaust stoped comming out the carbs. if you have ne idea please let me know

Mag plate?

Mag plate fell off!.......now you have problems. If your carbs puffed smoke, I'd want to check to see if the key in the flwheel and magneto sheared. Sounds like your out of time. The only other thing that I know can make it backfire is the rotary valve.

Mag housing covers don't just come off. There are too many bolts that have to come loose at the same time or be left off durring an assembly. There has to be a reason. Check to see if the inside of the cover has scrape or wear marks on it. Could be that the flywheel gland nut backed off and let the flywheel hit the cover and broke some of the bolt heads off. If that was the case, you definately have some issues. Not only will the woodruff key be damaged, but the stator more than likely has damage to it. Take a closer look and see. You will need to test the stator to see if any of the coils are grounding too. Let me know what you find out and we will go from there.

That's the answer!

Thanks Don, I was at a loss for words on that. I felt the same way. There's what? about 6 or 8 bolts that hold it on? What do you think, maybe the mag came loose while he was riding it and it knocked the cover off......If so, seems the damage would be really obvious.......

Actually, there are 10 6mm bolts that hold the cover on. Personally, I have never seen a cover just come off if the bolts were on properly. Even if they had become loose to a point where the cover was loose, any water in the hull would have made it's way into the mag housing causing ignition issues. The only way for the cover to be "pushed" off would be for the flywheel to come off the crank. You're right...there would be obvious damage not to mention the retaining nut and split washer ground up inside the housing. :ack:

so i just had the motor rebuilt prior to the cover incident the guy said that a few of the bolts were seized and a few broke but he convinced me it was "OK" there were no scrapes on the cover sugesting that the plate was forced off. i didnt have the timing indicator but i did try checking the timing with a light and the timming was to the best of my knowlege in time strait in line with the center of the cylinder. also is there any way for the rotary valve to go bad while riding it. thanks guys for your help

Well, I would be looking into this a little further. Anytime you have bolts that just break off, you will probably have more. Sounds like a salt water ski with a lot of time on it. Ignition timing can be effected by a flywheel becoming loose and rotating on the crankshaft, sheering the woodruff key. It can also be altered by the stator assembly coming loose and rotating. You will have to remove the flywheel to check either of these conditions. You can check the stator coils by testing with an Ohm meter also. You would be checking for damage to the windings from a loose/broken bolt cutting the coil winding by checking for continuity to ground. You say you have a spark, so that may not be the issue. When you were drilling and tapping the broken bolts, the flywheel magnet could have attracted some of the filings and could be effecting your ignition. The other timing issue is induction timing. Rotax uses a rotary valve plate that spins in front of the intake ports, opening and closing them. This plate is driven by a brass rotary drive gear on the crankshaft. You can remove the carbs and, using your finger, hold pressure on the plate while you rotate the PTO. If the plate doesn't move or stops and hesitated anywhere in a 360 deg turn of the PTO, you have stripped the drive gear and it is time to rebuild again. Sorry to be long with the post, just trying to cover most of the bases.
