My first post on here. I am a Noob with engines and water crafts. I have read articles and re searched and getting worried about the many different responses resolutions so figured I would just post :

I was given a 2001 GTI that has been sitting in garage for 2 years by a cousin. I purchased new Battery and put in Ethanol free gas, took it out on lake got it started and it ran like crap for about 8 mins with no throttle, then all of sudden no problems (guessing bad gas etc). Ran it for 15 mins brought home. Took it out 2 days later and ran beautifully no hesitation plenty of power with a passenger. Decided to fix it up after reading all posts on here.

- New Spark plugs - Done
- Replaced all Grey lines with New lines - Done
- Replaced fuel valve with New one - Done
- Purchased a Carb rebuild Kit and replaced - Done
- Fixed Fuel gauge not working by taking out sending unit and cutting into tube and bypassing fuse. Gauge now works when I tilt the sending unit empty / full.

This weekend took it out after all the work and it started fine. The gauge worked. I was able to get it up to speed for about 2 mins and then all of a sudden the fuel gauge just kept going down to empty. I could barely use throttle as it would bog down and sounded like it would die. A couple of times I was able to finally get it past that bogging and it would pick up but then it would just go back to barely going. I also changed the fuel selector to Reserve to make sure no problem with Valve. I made it back to shore and it idles fine.

The only issue I had when putting everything back together was that i broke the little plastic cable guide for Injection Cable, I put a temporary piece of plastic for now till I order one.

Where do I start trouble shooting: I read about setting Hi's and Low's on Carb from Mukini site but want to make sure I tackle things in order, any help appreciated.

Check the voltage with the engine running up around 5000 rpm. I'm thinking that you have a regulator going bad.

Thanks for replying Dr Honda,

Are you thinking the voltage regulator would effect the bogging down issue ? Going to go buy a volt meter, how do I know it's around 5000 rpm's only got a speed gauge ?

Thanks
Tam

Did you check the voltage? It doesn't have to be 5000 exactly. Just bring it up a little, and make sure it's around 13.5 to 14v.
