2001 GTI problems

Hello,

I'm new to the forum per se but not new to reading on here. I have been reading in the back ground for awhile now trying to learn all I can about my new pwc. I try to use the search button as much as possible. I also have all the basic guides and help threads book marked such as the great fuel troubleshooting one by JPX.

Now my problem is fuel related, and as stated I have read the guide. I just wanted to ask a quick question to see if I could get pointed in the right direction as my problem is slightly strange. I have not found many with the more exact symptoms I am having with my ski.

As stated in the title my Ski is a 2001 GTI. My problems is that when I put it in water it will start like a champ. I will let it warm up then idle it out of the slue (the boat ramp is in a off wash of the river) where it will full throttle and plane out working exactly as it is supposed to getting up to a speed of right around / above 50 mph. * I am a big guy weighing in at a hefty 270 lbs*

It will run excellent , no issues , during full throttle; part; and also idle. You can turn it off then crank it immediately up with out any issues. Then ride it to the beach to get out and swim.

Here is where the problem comes in. After getting to the beach and sitting for 30 mins to a hour while we swim. I go to get back on the ski and crank it. It cranks up fine, as well as seems to idle ok. But when I go to give it gas it bogs and tries to die. It will do this off and on for around 2 to 4 mins or so with me barely pushing the gas it will get up to 5 to 10 mph yet if you give it more gas it will bog. After a few mins of this it seems to catch on a full throttle push and away it goes like there was never a issue.

At this point you can ride it like normal with full throttle, part throttle, or even idle. I can also turn it off and then on again with no problems or bogging issue when I try to full throttle. This strange issue has me slightly confused.

Sorry for this being so long but I wanted to try and describe my problem to my best of abilities. Like I said I have read, searched, and read some more on fueling issues on pwc but mine seems to be one of the non norm problems.

Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Jonathan T.

That's a strange one.

After you sit... have you looked into the bilge? Is it full of water?

When was the last time you put spark-plugs in it?

I would pull the carbs, and verify everything. Also... make sure you have OEM Mikuni diaphragms.

Thanks for the reply DR. , to answer your question no after sitting I have not checked the bilge to see if it was full of water. To be honest I am not exactly sure of the bilge on my ski.

I changed the spark plugs the other day ( it was the first thing I did after problems creeped up ) to the stock recommended NGK plugs with a gap as most recommended on other threads.

I figure I am going to have to pull the carbs, someone had mentioned vapor lock but I'm not sure.

Also when I open my gas cap I am getting a venting noise kinda like when you open a carbinated soda. I had heard if you get a sucking noise it means your vent hose or check valve is blocked/clogged but I'm not sure if it means a actual suction noise or the noise I'm hearing.
