Hi all.

I am considering buying a 1996 gtx from a friend. I have ridden this several times and every time there is this minor problem.

When you get up to about 4000 rpm, and keep gently applying throttle, it will at some point rapidly accelerate up to 5000 + rpm.

The owner says that that is the second jet in the carb kicking in. He says nothing can be done about it. But as it is, there is about a 10 mph range that you can't go. You are either going below, or above, depending if the second jet has kicked in or not.

Is this a fixable issue? What can be done, if anything.

Thanks for your help.

First... tell him to pull his head out of whatever orifice it's stuck in.

Yes, the carbs have 2 jets... but they don't "Kick in." They all blend together, and you will never feel one circuit coming in over the other.

Generally, if you have a serge of RPM... that's cavitation. It will feel like spinning tires in a car. The RPM's come up, but you don't accelerate. Then, all of the sudden, it loads, and goes. (does that sound right?)

If it is a fuel issue, it needs to be corrected. If you run a 2-stroke engine in a lean condition, you can burn it up.

If you buy the ski... I'm sure we can help you with the problem.

Hi

It isn't cavitation, as it really does accelerate to from probably about 20 to 25 to about 35mph or so. That is why I don't like it, I can't have a relaxing ride at around 25mph.

It sounds like it has dirty carbs or in need of a carb rebuild possibly. It could be a couple things that might cause that problem it is experiencing. It is not a normal condition for a seadoo to run that way.
