1996 GTX Purchase

As I was entering a Sea Doo dealership today I noticed two clean 96 GTX's sitting on a brand new trailer advertised for $6800.00.

Wow, did they look bitchin! (I apologize Sniper, I've been using that word since my high skool' daze in the early sixties)

Fortunately, not only was my moola was in the bank, but I am also wise enough to know not to purchase any auto or sea craft from a dealer, so as much as I wanted to buy em, I was able to avoid the temptation and as hard as it was to avoid the impulse to buy, I simply bought the parts I initially came to buy and split.

(I did, however, talk to a salesman and to my surprise, he called me a few hours later to advise someone bought them with no hassle. Talk about dumb! Two weeks until the season ends and someone parts with good money for a toy to use once)

That said, as many folks know on the Forum, for two months I've been working on my engine, replacing the crankshaft, cleaning the carbs, etc., so I thought when I saw the shiny 96 Doos, maybe its time to get something newer?

After doing some research via the Kelly Blue Book, it was clear that I was wise to walk away because KKB set a price per Doo between 1220/1855.

My way of figuring, both Doos were worth about $3100 (I split the price between retail and wholesale) and the trailer was probably worth $800, so the total for all three should be, in my estimate about $3900.

Next, I found a article posted by Seadoosource that made mention that should the MPEM become defective, it will be quite expensive compared to an older Doo, about $500.

Not only that, SeaDooSource pointed out that it is dealer time should the lanyard be lost.

The MPEM and landyard could be dealer breakers for me.

Anyway, last night I found two 96's in perfecto condition, however, the seller wants $5500. I shot him an offer of $3500.00 along with a copy of Kelly Blue Book's retail/wholesale prices. He did not call this morning, so, I guess I know what he thought of my offer!

Anyone out there on the Forum have any suggestions to help me with my decision to buy a 96 GTX, knowing the potential problems that could be caused by a defective MPEM?

Being the Thrifty guy I am, maybe if I buy I should stick to a 1199 GTS or GTI, thus, I would have the same hull as my 93 GTX's and a newer, improved engine?

Whatcha think Forum?

a pair of 96's on a nice trailer... $3500 to $4000 TOPS! (that's with fresh engines, and rebuilt pumps)

2 skis on a trailer are worth less than the sum of the parts.

Not to metion... it's end of the season, and price will start to drop.

A dealer will always be able to sell for an inflated price, since they can finance people, and they give the illusion of a "Safe buy." I always buy other peoples crap cheap (diamond in the rough) and clean them up. If they have good compression, and you can find a spark... the rest is easy.

Thanks Dr H.

You and I are on the same page with respect to price.

Whats your opinion about the "new & improved" MPEM?

To me, it seems like if something goes wrong, or it is lost, then its a trip to the dealer, wherein, if I bought a GTS or GTI I basically would have the same hull as my 93 GTX, but with a bigger engine.

Thoughts always appreciated from a wise man.

I am also considering going to the dark side, a phrase prosecutors use to described former cops that become attorneys and move to the defense side.

In this case, the dark side refers to pondering an idea of purchasing a 97 Kawasaki 1100 STX in contrast to a 96 GTX or a 99 GTS or GTI.

Any comments?

Prices will vary GREATLY across the country. Up here in Oregon, a good clean 96 GTX will go for 2500. I don't see too many 96-97's. I see a ton of 95's. My wife used to have a 95, now has a 98, and the hull is much better, as well as the info center (with air and water temp). I bought it for 500 with a blown motor last year. I've ridden the STX, and don't like it as much as the GTX. The 96 GTX also has the 787, which is a great powerful and reliable engine. If you want more power, get the 98+ with the 951 130HP. But with any brand, the bigger engine, the less reliable they get.

Money Man:

If you have the time, explain the reason you like the 98 hull better than the 93-95 (GTX).

Several years ago, (2004) I purchased two 2001 GTX's with the 951 engine. After one trip to the River I found they were too heavy. I like bouncing over waves and gliding; speed is not my thing.

Plus, on some Forum I read that the 951's were prone to water ingestion, so, I sold them a week after I bought them for a couple hundred dollars profit.

As I stated, I like the old hull, so maybe I will keep my eye out for some 99 GTI or GTS's. Fall is quickly approaching, so there will be bargains.

I also am concerned about the "info" center: something more to go wrong. All the bouncing surely is not good for electronics!

They are more prone to water ingestion, but I have had 2 seasons out of mine with no problem. The hull does feel heavier, but it doesn't seem to slip out from underneath you. It feels a little more forgiving, more planted, almost sportier. i haven't heard of any problems with the info center, either.
