I hvae a 1994 GTX with a 650cc dual carb motor, I got this from a friend for a good price.

I have a issue, I can start and idle it all day on the trailer, and i can start it first thing after loading in the water.

But as i ride some where it wont go past 15-20 mph, then it will surge to full speed, Im goin to rebuild and clean the carbs to hopefully fix that issue. Hopefully that will fix the issue of not idleing in the water also??

Also if i stop somehwere, say an island, and try to start it back up, it wont start up, it will crank over a few times then i guess the battery drops voltage and dont have enough to crank the starter over, its a brand new battery, all new cables, connections, fueses etc......

So im just wondering why it will start out of the water, under no load, but once its in the water it has a issue starting under water pressure/load??

Any help would be great, im goin to rebuild the starter, i dont think it has ever been done in the 16 years, lol, so new internals will hopefully help the starter out.

Thanks for any input/comments/suggestions!

Thats a great idea, new starter brushes. The old gas probly is bad and the whole
fuel circulatory probly needs up-dated with a new plastic selector valve, new fuel lines (you probly got grey tempo bad lines) water separator/filter needs washed,
fuel tank swabbed out. Carbs gone thru. Then you will have a great summer.
Grease the zerks, cables, latches, and the new painted carbs. I even do my intake
and jetpump so crap goes thru easily. Bills86e

I took the old shitty gas out, put new gas in, its premixed.

I replaced all the fuel lines except the vent lines, the one vent line that is below the rub rail up towards the front of the ski, looks like someone plugged it, could this effect anything?

I took the fuel tank out when i was doing the lines, it was pretty clean inside.

Where can i get a plastic fuel selector ill buy one now!

grease zerks, cables and lines??? which and where is all these lol!

thanks bill

Well i cleaned the fuel selector today, and boy was it gummed up horribly, maybe that explains the surging speeds, i also cleaned the carbs again really good, the inlet, pulse and outlet ends were very gummed up also, i did away with all the grey fuel lines, except for the venting lines, which ill do this weekends

any ideas or comments guys???

You're on the right track. I had the same problems as you, though in my 95 SPX [same 657x motor].... I went through the fuel system and replaced everything with brand new parts, besides the fuel baffle which i cleaned thoroughly. I bought new fuel line, hose clamps, new fuel selector valve, new fuel filter assembly, pulled the tank and cleaned it, carbs cleaned and rebuilt, all new intake gaskets, cleaned flame arrestor grate..

In addition, I too had vent tubes on each side of my ski that are cut and plugged...mine is running fine though, so i'm just going to leave them. Make sure you replace the line for the fuel baffle vent...it's the one that goes upwards and tee's off; one side goes out of the port side of the hull and the other connects to a grommet near where the front compartment latches.

I went out twice this last weekend and my ski is running like BRAND NEW.

Also, I added an inline fuel filter about 6 inches before the carb inlet to ensure that if any other junk does make its way through the fuel system, it will not get past this filter. Also, these inline filters are cheap and alot easier to replace than anything else in the fuel system!!!

a good idea is to take that fuel selector valve that was all gummed up, throw it in the back of ur truck, get online under the parts section and order a new one... reason being almost gauranteed impossible to clean ALL of the blue crap out!!! their only 25-30 bucks and well worth it!!

I soaked the fuel selecter in acid cleaner i use for my detailing business, and the in general purpose degreaser, then water, blew it all out with the compressor and it flows 50 million times better.

Im gonna try to take it out tommorow and see if it still bogs and surges in speed etc...

carbs kits and starter rebuild kit are ordered and on the way!!

How's the Power?

Might sound ridiculous but did you test the voltage of your battery to make sure your juice is good? With resistance of the water which is considerable, combined with an inadequately charged battery; I've seen ski's turn but not start for the same reason.

i bought a new battery for it, but i never charged it before installing, but i just charged it and it hold 13.4v when i turn it over, starts right up now, havent tested it in the water yet tho, damn florida weather

not sure if this applies

I had a waverunner 650 that did the same thing; start great in my garage but would not start in the water. Ended up being a buster reed valve under the carb. That was a yamaha, not sure if sea doo has a reed valve.
