Hi. I have just bought my third Sea Doo thinking I was getting a good deal. Thus far it would seem not so much. The ski was incredibly clean, but had a blown motor.
Called up SBT, and got a motor delivered. Motor went in under the supervision of a friend who has been working on skis forever. I ran it for the first couple hours of the break in time. Everything ran solid, but it seemed to skip every now and again, like it was misfiring or not getting enough fuel. This was a salt water ski, so I thought there could be some corrosion issues in certain areas. The misfire/fuel issue seemed to get worse. Oddly enough, at full fuel, it skipped less. I thought it might be a bad fuel valve, so I ordered a new one from Sea Doo. Got the valve in and installed it. Cranked the ski, and it fired right off. Went to the lake and put it in the water. It fired right away, and idled off the trailer. Then it cut off and would not restart. Get pulled over to the dock, and managed to get it cranked again. It ran for about 2 minutes and cut off. It has not restarted since. Pulled a spark plug out, left it plugged into the wire and laying on top of the engine, like you would test to see if there was spark in an older car, and no spark is seen.
Here is what I have thought about and tried. I thought it might be an issue of the coil being bad. I swapped the coil from my running 1999 GS to the 02 GTI LE (both are the 720 motors). That did not change anything. Next I swapped the other electrical connector in the rear electrical box. No avail. Following this and just in case, I swapped the plug wires too. (yes already switched plugs). That didn't work either. The next thing I tried was the small box that has a screw running through it and into the MPEM up front (Sorry that I'm not good with the technical name for the part). That also changed nothing. Finally I changed out the MPEM from the GS to the GTI. Absolutely nothing. The engine turns over and sounds strong, but it does not catch.
Just for fun, I put all the contents of the rear electrical box, and the MPEM from the 02 into the 99. As soon as I put the digital key from the 02, it fired right off and ran.
This Sea Doo has a brand new carb, the SBT motor, black fuel lines (I know about the grey lines issue), and the new fuel valve. There is fuel in the filter that screws into the lines. When the spark plugs are pulled out, they are wet with gas.
What am I doing wrong is essentially the question, and what else might I be missing to try.
Thanks in advance.
