    Default Dess Post Problem??

I was bringing my 96 XP out of winterization to start it so that I could sell it. When I put the key on, I got a single beep instead of the 2 quick beeps and it wouldnt start. After researching it, I found that the single beep was a "Wrong Key" code, but this is the only key I've ever had. I did get the double beep once though and tried to crank it but coulndt get it started. I sprayed a little starting fluid in the carbs, but then when I went to put the key on, I got the single beep again and havent been able to cranks it since. Since I got the double chirp once, do you think it's an issue with the DESS post only? Or do you think I have a problem with the key? I've cleaned both surfaces really well to no avail.

Clean all the connections in your rear box, clean the grounds well, check the fuses in the rear box, also check your ground, If it is your dess post i have a couple for sale. Just pm me if you need one

Well, that didn't work. I installed the new dess post, I cleaned all the terminals in the back box, inspected the fuses, etc... all looked good. I put the key on and all I got was the one long beep instead of the two shorts. My understanding is that the one long beep is an indication that the computer thinks that the key is the incorrect one.

    Now what would you suggest?

Take it to a dealer or someone who has a programmer. Most need the whole machine. If you have nothing close you can send your ebox or mpem to me and I can program one for you. See my other thread for pricing.

Id recommend getting a replacement key vs. trying to reprogram the old key.

I would suggest a brand new key as well, if you buy a new key from a dealer $45-$50 they will program it, but the charge for that is different dealer to dealer $25-$60

Is there a way they can test the key to see if it's lost it's code? I don't really trust this dealer as once I took two ski's in to get one serviced and when I picked it up, they removed the plug caps to the other ski. They also told me that i HAD to get a new key if I replaced the DESS post, which is simply untrue. They initially told me that I would probably need a new MPEM which would be anywhere between $800 - $2000

    x2....gotta love stealerships.

No...there isnt really a way to test the keys. The tool will tell me if a key is shot...I just had one that refused to register, grabbed another key and it programmed fine.

The MPEM is what knows what keys it will accept; you can program up to 8 keys on one MPEM. Thats where Im a little lost on how a key would give the MPEM the wrong code, VS a bad key like mentioned above.
