hard starting

i have a 98 seadoo when i hit the starter it whirrrrs,like its spinning but not engageing. when i pull the seat i clamp a vicegrip in the prop shaft and wiggle it back and forth and then hit the starter and it starts and runs great.

anybody heard of this before?

you mess with the shaft everytime it misses?, if so, don't, then hit start button again. maybe bendix fail'n/stick'n?
