ECM Flash

Hello all,
I'm glad I found this forum, looks like a great deal of info here!
I have a 2001 Islandia with a 240 Merc. Has anyone had their ecm reprogrammed? Any difference in performance? What exactly would a flash change?

Any ideas?
I see these Merc's max out at 6000 rpm's. Isn't this higher than Mercury power heads on outdrives? Does this mean the ecm's are already slightly modified? Has anyone else had their computer reprogrammed? Is the timing advanced with an ecm?
